Richard Mille continues to lead the conversation in contemporary watchmaking with the RM 75-01 Sapphire Flying Tourbillon, a collection that once again underscores the brand’s technical authority and creative independence. More than a decade ago, in 2012, Richard Mille had already established its authority in sapphire, creating the world’s first watch with an all-sapphire case. The RM 75-01 adds a new chapter to the brand’s sapphire history with a movement designed for perfect sapphire – a first in the brand’s history. Designed by Cécile Guenat and her team, the collection is inspired by two very different worlds: Gothic architecture and the natural flow of water. These tributes to architecture and nature are reflected in the use of form and color. The case is made entirely of a single piece of sapphire crystal and is available in three limited editions: one with a transparent sapphire crystal case (limited to 15 pieces) and two with a blue or lavender-pink sapphire crystal case back (limited to 10 pieces each). "We treat each element as an architectural work of art," says Cécile Guenat, Creative and Development Director at Richard Mille. "The harmonious depth and the careful selection of materials create a dynamic and fascinating appearance of the movement." The movement's architecture is inspired by ribbed domes, with micro-blasted red gold flanges resting on satin-polished titanium pillars. SuperLuminova and a red gold upper flange give the skeleton design structure and presence, even in dim light. The movement is designed to be lightweight yet robust, as always. It features a geometrically simple, multi-layered baseplate that gives depth and dimension to the mechanism. Its hardness is second only to diamond, requiring extremely high precision in machining and finishing. The coloring of the metal oxides adds to the complexity of the process, as any slight variation in the growth process can cause defects, making each finished case a technical achievement in itself. It takes more than 1,000 hours of machining to create an RM 75-01 sapphire case, including 40 days of continuous polishing. Nearly a third of this time is spent on polishing, which is made even more demanding by the case's curved shape and structural pillars. The impeccable transparency of the sapphire crystal allows the new movement, the fully skeletonized RM75-01 movement with a flying tourbillon and a flying barrel, to be perfectly displayed. The movement is completely enclosed by the sapphire crystal, making it breathtakingly clear.
